Behavior Genetic Analyses in Chickens and Quail
نویسنده
چکیده
Behavior-genetic analysis requries an interfacing of genetics and behavior. This may be accomplished by studying the genetic architecture of specific behaviors and by examining how behaviors influence selection and thereby modify the gene pools of subsequent generations. The behaviors emphasized in our research include those associated with reproduction, feeding and social strife. This morning's presentation will include experiments conducted to study mating and feeding behaviors.

Serum Albumin Polymorphism in Quail and Chicken-quail Hybrids.
ERUM albumin polymorphism has been reported in such animals as pigs (KRISTJANSSON 1963), horses (STORMONT and SUZUKI 1963), cattle (ASHTON 1964; ASHTON and LAMPKIN 1965), chickens (MCINDOE 1962) and turkeys ( QUINTEROS, STEVENS, TORMONT and ASMUNDSON 1964). BECKMAN, CONTERIO and MAINARDI (1963) examined the serum protein patterns of avian species hybrids and found that in eight out of 11 inters...

Thirteen oncogenic and necrotizing animal viruses were assayed in LIFE Sciences, Inc. (LSI)-specific pathogen-free Japanese quail and LSI-specific pathogen-free chicken embryo cell cultures. Nine viruses produced similar titers in the quail and chicken cell systems, whereas four viruses showed significantly higher titers in chickens. Young Japanese quail and chickens were inoculated with five s...
متن کاملTransgenic quail as a model for research in the avian nervous system: a comparative study of the auditory brainstem.
Research performed on transgenic animals has led to numerous advances in biological research. However, using traditional retroviral methods to generate transgenic avian research models has proved problematic. As a result, experiments aimed at genetic manipulations on birds have remained difficult for this popular research tool. Recently, lentiviral methods have allowed the production of transge...
متن کاملEvidence of Expanded Host Range and Mammalian-Associated Genetic Changes in a Duck H9N2 Influenza Virus Following Adaptation in Quail and Chickens
H9N2 avian influenza viruses continue to circulate worldwide; in Asia, H9N2 viruses have caused disease outbreaks and established lineages in land-based poultry. Some H9N2 strains are considered potentially pandemic because they have infected humans causing mild respiratory disease. In addition, some of these H9N2 strains replicate efficiently in mice without prior adaptation suggesting that H9...
متن کاملEmbryonic, fetal and post-natal animal-human mixtures: an ethical discussion.
Overview: The potential power of embryonic and fetal inter-species mixtures became clear about a decade ago in a series of dramatic experiments in which small sections of brains from developing quails were taken and transplanted into the developing brains of chickens. The resulting chickens exhibited vocal trills and head bobs unique to quails, proving that the transplanted parts of the brain c...
